"You can say any fool thing to a dog, and the dog will give you this look that says, `My God, you're RIGHT! I never would've thought of that!"
-- Dave Barry
MEET ROSCOE! ROSCOE RESCUED DAN AND SARAH. HERE IS HIS AMAZING STORY.
Rosco’s Journey
My sisters live in North Caroline so I fly down to visit them once or twice a year. Wh
ile I was down there three years ago, my sister Nicky asked me what I wanted to do. I told her that I wanted to go look at puppies. I thought for sure she was going to take me to a pet shop where the dogs are 400 bucks a piece and came from some puppy mill. But of course not, not Nicky. She new that I would never buy a puppy from a puppy mill. So she pulls up to the South Carolina humane society. My heart broke in there, so many animals with out homes. We were walking by some cages when I spotted this mangled looking six week old German Sheppard mix. His nose was missing patches of fur where flies had done some damage. The end of his tail was just a nub were it had been chewed on and it looked and smelt like the little guy had never had a bath.
I found out that he had been living with the homeless. They found him on the streets and were doing their best to take care of him. Feeding him garbage scraps and water to keep him alive. They named him Rocky. When they realized that they couldn’t take care of him they decided to bring him into the shelter. The volunteers there renamed him Rocky Shelter.
We took him out to play with and he ran right over to me and peed all over my pants and then snuggled right under my leg. It was not hard to fall in love with those big brown eyes. He was perfect! I called my husband. He was back in Wisconsin and at work no less. He was super excited. He had always wanted a puppy and grew up with German Sheppard’s. It was decided, I was going to adopt the little guy. When I put him down to go fill out the paper work he decided to poop all over my shoes. I think he loved me too. How do you say no now, he had already marked me.
We took him from the humane society straight to Petsmart for a bath. Everyone who met the little six pound fuzz bucket fell in love. They cleaned him up and got him smelling good for his first ever vet visit. It turned out that he is allergic to flee saliva and had been
scratching and biting at his face and tail. He also had whip worm. The vet gave him some cream for his bits and medicine for the worms.
He had his first ever plane ride a six weeks of age. He did great! He was my carry on luggage. He slept in a blue pet carrier that was placed in the storage area under the seat back in front of me. He had no accidents. But after we landed I was pulling him out of the pet carrier and he spotted the grass and started peeing in mid air.
It was love at first sight for Dan. We were trying to find a name that fit him, and all we could think of was the dog from Dukes of Hazard, Flash. But He didn’t seem like a flash. And then it hit us both at the same time, Rosco.
Rosco is an amazing dog. He is very smart. Just point your figure at him like a gun and say bang. You’ll have one dead puppy on your hands. We took him to training classes at Petsmart with Sahra and she helped us become good parents. He is special. I wish there are word words to explain how he has changed
our lives, but there just aren’t. He has given Dan and me a family.
